27 - Skirmish at Wambaw Bridge

Loyalist Col. Benjamin Thompson, with an estimated 700 troops in search of provisions and a fight with Marion’s army, arrived northward at Drake’s Plantation, where he left his weary infantry, and continued with some 200 cavalry about eight miles further to Wambaw Bridge. Being alerted by Maj. William Benison, Commanding officer Col. Lemuel Benton’s two regiments of “six-months men” and “reformed Tories” crossed the Bridge and causeway. Thompson’s militia pursued, but the Bridge breaking down prevented crossing and following. Thompson reported only one dragoon wounded, Benton lost about forty men killed.
