21 - Near Moncks Corner

Within four miles of Monck’s Corner, Patriot Cols. Lee and Maham attacked retreating British after the Battle of Eutaw Springs. Capt. Joseph Eggleston was detached to attack the enemy’s flank, his horse was killed, but he escaped with five holes in his clothes and equipment. Lee discovered that he had captured wagons filled with “miserable wounded,” who “supplicated so fervently to be permitted to proceed” that Lee assented, not wishing “to add to their misery and to his trouble.”
